Why it is important to Recycle used UV Lamps & Ballasts:
- Ultraviolet Lamps contain mercury which is a toxic substance, it is important to dispose of them properly.
- When mercury is released into the water or air it can cause damage to the human nervous system.
- By separating the toxic substances from the glass and lamp components there is no hazardous waste going into the air or water. The mercury taken from the UV lamps are reused into future products.
- Failure to comply in recycling mercury UV lamps could leave you liable for penalties including fines up to $25,000 or more.
- Recycling shows that you are being environmentally responsible!
PCB & Non PCB Ballasts
- Polychlorinated Biphenyls or PCBs were manufactured and used in ballasts/transformers from 1929 to the late 1970’s in commercial and industrial applications.
- PCB’s were banned in the late 1970’s by the EPA due to their toxic substances containing probable carcinogens which are possible causes of cancer.
- Once a ballast containing PCBs is released into the environment by improper disposal, the capacitor on it can break open releasing harmful organic chemicals. Proper disposal is pertinent to avoid any exposure.
